Our Vision for Future Power Systems

r6digital 29 August, 2023

Decarbonised, Secure, Efficient, Flexible & Human-centred.

As carbon-intensive generation is withdrawn, power systems must depend on a growing proportion Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) generation, both centralised and decentralised.

This means their operating environment becomes both bi-directional and more volatile as their conventional sources of system flexibility are also declining.

As critical societal systems, decarbonised power systems must deliver a ‘balanced scorecard’ of outcomes.  As physics-based systems operating with growing levels of volatility, they must be flexible and self-balancing across the full length of the value chain.   In this context, we envision self-balancing future systems where…

In other words, decarbonised power systems must be secure, efficient, flexible and human-centred.  Achieving this is one of the most complex challenges we’ve ever faced, and nothing short of a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to grid transformation will get us there.
