Energy systems are foundational to human life, wellbeing and economic activity. In the case of electric power systems, they are also increasingly critical to many other sectors including water, transport and communications.
Already among the largest and most complex ‘machines’ ever created, these systems must now be fundamentally transformed for a Net Zero Emissions future. This is perhaps the most complex challenge ever faced by humanity.
And if that wasn’t challenging enough, as critical societal systems, it is also essential that the approach to transformation enables complexity to be ‘tamed’. While these systems will never be ‘simple’, this is essential to enable diverse stakeholders to build trust and meaningfully participate in the key trade-off decisions that impact them.
Our Vision
Secure, Cost Efficient, & Human-centred
As critical societal systems, decarbonised energy systems must deliver a ‘balanced scorecard’ of outcomes for customers and communities. As physics-based systems now impacted by entirely new levels of volatility, they must also become inherently more flexible, adaptive and self-balancing.
As one example, legacy electricity systems traditionally quite ‘siloed’ bulk power, transmission and distribution systems must – in concert with the rapidly expanding fleet of distributed resources – be made capable of functioning ‘end-to-end’ as a self-balancing system.
Energy Catalyst envisions deeply decarbonised energy systems that are secure, cost efficient and human-centred. As some of the most complex systems ever created by humanity, pragmatically we recognise achieving this is non-trivial. In practice, however, our track-record demonstrates the success of our holistic, multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary processes for building trust, navigating complexity and achieving timely progress.
